Debarking and Devoicing

SPCA advocates for the use of reward-based training to manage excessive barking in dogs.

Although barking is a normal behaviour for dogs, and an important means of communication, excessive barking indicates as underlying issue. Dogs bark excessively for numerous reasons including boredom, excitement, distress, territorial defence, fear and anxiety. SPCA recommends working with a qualified behaviourist to manage this behaviour.

SPCA advocates that surgical debarking or devoicing animals is prohibited.

SPCA opposes body modifications except in situations where the procedure is carried out solely for therapeutic reasons by a veterinarian, or a veterinary student under the direct supervision of a veterinarian. Adequate and appropriate medical care must be provided prior to, during and after the operation, including anaesthesia and analgesia.
