Sharks

SPCA opposes the use of shark nets because they cause a significant number of deaths of marine mammals, sharks, turtles, rays and other animals.

SPCA opposes shark finning, also known as the “harvesting” of fins. SPCA advocates for a complete and worldwide ban on the sale of shark fin soup and other shark fin products.

The practice of cutting the fins off live sharks and throwing the sharks back into the sea is unacceptable. The sharks who have their fins cut off have no chance of survival and will either starve to death, be preyed upon by other fish, or drown. As well as the obvious welfare issues, our organisation is concerned that the indiscriminate killing of such huge numbers of sharks may negatively impact the ecosystem.

SPCA opposes to the baiting and killing of sharks where shark attacks have occurred.
