SPCA launches one-day-only matched giving campaign

20 March 2024

Kiwi animal lovers are being asked to make a donation to New Zealand’s leading animal welfare charity on Wednesday 20 March to double their impact on animals in need.

SPCA launches one-day-only matched giving campaign

For one day only, donations to SPCA will be matched thanks to generous sponsors meaning contributions on the day will go twice as far.

SPCA incurs a cost of $65 million annually to operate, and only 10% of this comes from Government funding, which goes specifically into its Inspectorate services. All other costs of rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming our nation’s most vulnerable animals – as well as extensive desexing initiatives and pet owner support incentives – comes directly from public donations, making fundraisers like this one essential.

Last year SPCA Centres saw over 33,000 animals come through their doors nationwide, with nearly 7,000 having entered their care this year so far. Taking in abused, abandoned, or neglected animals means many of these require extensive care before they are able to be rehomed, and costs build up quickly. But SPCA CEO Todd Westwood says fundraising initiatives like these are exactly how SPCA can give every animal that care.

“From our beginning in 1872, SPCA has only been able to exist because of the support of everyday New Zealanders,” Mr. Westwood says.

“As a heritage charity, we feel honoured to have the trust and goodwill of the New Zealand public, and we hope donations made tomorrow will reflect that vital support. I am so proud to be part of an organisation which has long provided such a valuable service to our communities. I humbly ask everyone who can, to take the opportunity of having their contribution to the animals doubled on the day.”

Donations can be made easily online at double.spca.nz and New Zealanders are encouraged to share the incentive with their friends, family and colleagues.

“The love and care of needy animals is something we can all get behind,” says Mr Westwood. “We’re so grateful to everyone who donates, and the amazing sponsors who are matching donations.”
