Live Animals as Prizes

Animals in Entertainment, Sport, and Work

SPCA advocates for deliberate decision-making for animal ownership and that owners ensure they are able to meet the animal’s physical, health, and behavioural needs prior to acquiring them.

SPCA opposes the giving of live animals as prizes due to the negative impacts on the animal’s welfare.

SPCA is concerned for the welfare of animals which come to be owned by chance, rather than as a result of a deliberate decision. SPCA supports responsible animal ownership where the owner is able to provide facilities, care, knowledge and resources to meet the physical, health, and behavioural needs of the animal.
