Breed Specific Legislation (BSL)

SPCA advocates for the removal of Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) that prohibits or significantly limits the possession of dogs based solely upon their breed or type.

SPCA advocates that dogs are classified as potentially dangerous or dangerous based on their behaviour, not their appearance. It is well established that any type of dog can pose a risk to human safety. Research has demonstrated that determining dog breeds based on appearance is often inaccurate.

SPCA supports legislation which places the responsibility on the owner to properly train and manage their dog’s behaviour as a key component of responsible ownership.
