Sweet Potato, a small cream mixed breed dog arrived at our Centre in a great deal of distress with a traumatic injury. It’s not clear how Sweet Potato got her injuries, but they were very serious and the only way to save her life was to amputate her right back leg.

Amputation involves major surgery and it’s not the first choice vets make as is is very invasive and as with any surgery comes with immense risks. Sometimes though, it’s the best way to help an animal as it removes the source of their pain and suffering. For Sweet Potato, who arrived in terrible agony, couldn’t walk, and was desperately dehydrated, vets knew it was the right thing to do.

Sweet Potato’s surgery went well, and she spent several weeks on crate rest, firstly in the hospital at an SPCA Centre, and then with an experienced foster. Once her wound had healed, her foster spent time with her, helping her to regain strength at her amputation site and learn how to live life with three legs. Regular physio sessions helped her muscles get stronger and re-learn things like sitting and rolling over.

Sweet Potato has embraced life on three legs with amazing resilience and joy. She's fully adapted and doesn't let anything slow her down. Her favourite things are going for walks, belly rubs, and cuddling on the couch. She also doesn’t mind a tasty treat or two!

Sweet Potato is one of the lucky ones. So many people played an important role in her recovery, including the kind person who brought her to our Centre, our vet team, animal attendants, volunteers, and fosterers. Sweet Potato received all the physical care, love, and attention she needed to survive her terrible injury, be rehabilitated, and now thrive in her forever home.

But none of Sweet Potato’s care would have been possible without donations from caring animal lovers from around the country – people like you.

Support from incredible people like you helped give Sweet Potato her second chance. Donations made sure she received the surgery and after-care she needed. They gave her a comfy, safe place to rest. They made sure she had good, nutritious food to eat, and they ensured she had an experienced foster family who could help with her rehabilitation and teach her how to adapt to life on three legs. Donations also helped find Sweet Potato her forever home where she is loved, spoilt, and treated like the queen she is. That’s the amazing power of a donation.

Animals like Sweet Potato arrive at our doors daily. Animals that need urgent medical treatment, specialist rehabilitation, food, shelter, and love. Donations from people who care make all the difference for animals like Sweet Potato.

Together with your kindness we can achieve incredible results for vulnerable animals. Please consider donating today to help animals like Sweet Potato.
