Using Wild Caught Fish in Animal Feeds

Animals in the Wild

SPCA opposes the practice of feeding farmed fish with purpose-caught wild forage fish.

SPCA opposes the use of purpose-caught wild forage fish as fishmeal and fish oil in animal feeds, due to the impact of the fishing methods on the environment and the poor welfare of the wild forage fish during capture and slaughter. Our organisation supports the use of feed ingredients derived from alternative sources, as well as fishmeal and fish oil produced from fish processing and fishery by-products. Our organisation supports research in finding effective alternatives to fish meal and fish oil in feed, which maintain the nutritional requirements of carnivorous fish.
