Winter foster homes needed for dogs across the country
As the weather turns colder, SPCA Centres across Aotearoa are filling up with dogs and puppies in need of safe, warm foster homes.
SPCA is calling on Kiwis to help change a life, and maybe even their own, by becoming a foster hero this winter.
SPCA Centres will be overflowing with dogs and puppies in the coming season; over the next six months, approximately 2,000 dogs and puppies will need temporary foster care.
Winter is a tough time to attract foster homes due to shorter, colder days and wet weather, making your support even more needed. SPCA is aiming to sign up 700 new foster families during this winter’s campaign, with an urgent need for at least 250 new fosterers.
“Fostering is about so much more than giving a dog a temporary place to stay,” says Dr. Corey Regnerus-Kell, SPCA’s General Manager of Animal Services.
“It’s about opening your home to an animal that needs some kindness and companionship. You don’t just give them safety; you give them a chance to have a better future.
“There’s an opportunity for everyone to make a difference, no matter their lifestyle or household setup. We need help to care for a range of canines from mums with puppies and bottle-fed newborns, to teenage dogs and adults.”
Fostering can save a dog’s life, as well as provide fosters with a very rewarding experience – all the joy of being a dog owner, without the long-term commitment. When you foster, you provide care, socialisation and enrichment and in return, you’ll receive unconditional love that only a dog can give,” says Dr. Regnerus-Kell.
SPCA provides everything you need, including food, bedding, vet care, toys and more. All we ask from you is your time, love, and the ability to travel to and from your local Centre.
Everyone can foster, whether you have children, pets, housemates, or only a few weeks available. We will do our best to match you with the right dog.
Give them a winter worth remembering. Become a foster hero today.
