SPCA launches ‘Clear the Shelters’ campaign with 50% off adoption fees to get animals loving homes
For three weeks only, from 13 April to 3 May, adoption fees will be reduced by 50%, giving more animals the chance to find loving homes just in time for winter.
SPCA is launching its nationwide Clear the Shelters campaign with 50% off adoption fees, making it easier than ever for families to welcome a new animal into their home during the school holidays.
With almost 4,000 animals currently in SPCA care, and more than 1,000 ready for adoption right now, families are sure to find a companion who fits perfectly into their lives.
SPCA is also asking the public to give special focus to its long stay residents, such as Jenga, a long-stay puppy in Nelson, Jen, a long stay black cat in Masterton, along with two-year-old dog, Chase, who has been in care for 79 days. Cheeky tuxedo kitten Lillith in Hamilton has also been in the Centre since December.
The Hamilton Centre is also home to adult cat Piper, who was brought to a vet clinic by a member of the public. Despite contact being made with the owner, he was never picked up. He was then surrendered to SPCA, where he has been waiting since January.
“Piper was recently adopted, but sadly had to return to SPCA as his resident sibling wasn’t too happy with having a new one around the house,” says Hamilton Centre Manager, Kyla Robb.
“This sweet boy absolutely loves gentle pats and soft, reassuring strokes. He isn't the loud, demanding type; instead, he enjoys peaceful moments, cosy corners, and the kind of low-key companionship that comes with a calm home and we’re really hopeful someone can give that to him,” Kyla says.
SPCA Head of Animal Care, Selena Francisco says the timing of the campaign is perfect for school holidays, offering families the space and routine needed to help a new pet settle in.
“School holidays are an ideal time to bring a new animal into the family. You’re home more, routines are a little more relaxed, and it gives everyone the chance to spend time and bond with your new furry friend,” Selena says.
SPCA also highlights the importance of choosing responsible adoption, especially during kitten season and at a time when puppies are frequently offered for free online.
“We know people are often tempted by ‘free’ kittens or puppies, but those animals usually come without desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, or health checks,” she says. “When you adopt from SPCA, you’re choosing an animal who has been properly cared for, prepared for life as a pet, and supported by our dedicated staff and foster families. It’s the responsible choice for both the animal and the adopter.”
Every SPCA cat and dog adoption includes desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, a full health check, and behaviour support. Adopters also receive three months of free SPCA Pet Insurance, Purina food vouchers and Pet Direct vouchers to help their new companion settle in with nutritious food and treats.
Selena says the value of adoption is already exceptional, but the temporary fee reduction makes this the perfect moment for families who have been considering adopting.
“Our adoption fees reflect the level of care each animal receives, but for these three weeks we’re making it even easier for people to open their homes to an animal who truly needs them,” she says.
During the Clear the Shelters campaign, adoption fees will be reduced to:
- Kittens – $150
- Puppies – $200
- Cats – $75
- Dogs – $75
- Rabbits – $25
With so many animals patiently waiting for their “happily ever after,” SPCA encourages families to visit their local Centre, meet the animals, and discover the joy of adoption.
“There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing an animal leave our care and begin a new life,” Selena says. “If you’ve been thinking about adopting, now is the perfect time.”
