Cards for a cause
One Southland girl used her talent to make a difference for animals, donating $1,000 to our Invercargill Centre!
We’re always so grateful to hear from members of our community who go out of their way to fundraise for SPCA. One of these community members, Miss M O’Sullivan of Invercargill, did just that – raising $1,000 for her local Centre by putting her art skills to work!
M, a talented artist who has been making art since she was five years old, is currently completing her Silver Duke of Edinburgh award through her school. She was looking for a way to build up her skills-based and community service time and had the perfect idea!
Drawing on her skills, she set to work making cards featuring native New Zealand manu (birds). She found they were a good way to raise money for a cause she cares about – she loves animals and wants to be a vet one day! She’d done the same thing in December 2023, so she knew it was a great way to help animals.
M sat outside her local New World and Nichol’s Garden & Pet Centre stores to sell her cards. She received an incredibly warm and welcoming response from staff and customers alike; the team at Nichol’s were particularly kind and accommodating.
“We were blown away with M’s kindness” says Invercargill Centre Manager Felicity, who was delighted to meet M when she visited the Centre to make her donation. “We took M, her mum, and her little sister for a tour to meet some of our queens and their kittens, and brought one of our amazing adoptable dogs, Bam, out to have a pat and say thank you!” M also left a few remaining cards from her stock for the Centre to sell.
It’s so heartwarming to connect with the next generation of SPCA supporters, and to see them thinking of ways to help animals in their communities. If you're keen to follow in M’s footsteps, you can head to our Fundraising Hub for ideas and get started on raising money for animals!
