Snow deserved better. Dogs like her, tied up and left to suffer, think the world has forgotten them… have you?
When an SPCA Animal Welfare Inspector first found Snow, her emaciated body was covered in mud, blood and fleas. The ground around her was cold, hard and filthy. The light in her eyes had gone out.
In New Zealand, leaving dogs chained up for most of the day is unfortunately still legal. But many dogs are living their life at the end of a chain, with no shelter, food, water or comfort. Life for these dogs is a bleak reality, and they desperately need to be removed from the hellhole they’ve been forced to endure.
For dogs like Snow, rescue is only the start. They have a long road to recovery ahead – one they can’t travel alone. A donation is a life-changing moment of action for dogs like Snow.
Found starving on a chain, we don’t know how Bella had managed to be such a good mum to her seven puppies.
Tied up in a filthy area, Bobbi was two years old by the time he was rescued and given a second chance at life.
At seven years old, Clyde had never known life off a chain. Despite this, he had the loveliest, most gentle temperament.
Be the first responder to these dogs with a donation to keep our Inspectors on the road. With your backing, they will uplift dogs from horrific situations.
The rehabilitation of chained dogs isn’t only medical – it’s emotional. Many of these traumatised dogs need many months to make a full recovery.
The legal process of taking these dogs’ former owners to court is both lengthy and costly. A donation today is a demand for justice on behalf of those like Snow.

SPCA is the voice for neglected, abandoned or abused animals of New Zealand. With 28 Centres nationwide, we are the country’s biggest animal charity. Operating for over 150 continuous years, we are one of the oldest, too.
Our mission is to improve the welfare of all animals in New Zealand. We do this in a number of ways. As the only charity empowered to uphold the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and prosecute offenders, 54 Inspectors around the country are on the ground rescuing the most vulnerable animals, like Snow, every day.
Our dedicated advocacy arm works hard to achieve law change to better protect the lives of animals. This includes advocating for improved legal regulations around the practice of chaining dogs. So it never has the chance to get as bad as it did for Snow.
