Canine volunteer – adult dogs

Do you love dogs? Volunteers work with our adult canines and help clean, feed and care for them in our centres.

Help us improve the lives of dogs in our care. Volunteers work with and must be confident handling our adult dogs, who come in all shapes and sizes. Some of these dogs come to us with little or no training. Work in our adult dog run includes cleaning the dog rooms and the dog exercise yard, feeding the dogs, and providing toys and attention.

  • Minimum age: 18 years.
  • Personal time commitment: You must be able to commit to a regular shift for a period of at least six months.
  • Training: you will be required to attend training sessions for your specific area, in addition to receiving training while on-the-job during your shift.
  • Experience: to work with adult dogs you will need previous experience with dogs.

Current shifts available include:

  • Monday 8am - 12pm, 3pm - 5pm
  • Tuesday 8am -12pm
  • Wednesday 12pm - 3pm
  • Thursday 8am -12pm,12pm - 3pm, 5pm - 7pm
  • Friday 12pm - 3pm, 5pm - 7pm

What your volunteer shift would look like

8am-11pm

  • Greeting dogs in the morning
  • Allow them to go to the toilet
  • Cleaning/refreshing their bedrooms.
  • Preparing and feeding the dogs their breakfast
  • Occasional medicating when required (under the guidance of canine staff).

Other duties may include:

  • Monitoring dogs for any changes in their demeanour.
  • Spending time with them\socialisation.
  • Help the team provide training and enrichment.
  • Spot cleaning as needed.
  • Doing the fair share of Dishes/laundry.

11pm - 2pm

  • Provide the dogs their lunch or a lunchtime snack.
  • Practice handling skills with a variety of dogs
  • Provide dogs with outdoor exercise time.
  • Help the team provide training and enrichment.
  • Spot cleaning as needed.
  • Doing the fair share of Dishes/laundry.

2pm to 5pm

  • Feed the dogs their dinner (may include alternate forms of feeding, such as hand-feeding)
  • Continued opportunity to provide outdoor exercise time
  • Help the team provide training and enrichment.
  • Spot cleaning as needed.
  • Get dog rooms ready for bedtime.

5pm to 7pm

  • Continued outdoor exercise, allowing them the opportunity to toilet before bedtime.
  • Providing added comfort as the dogs wind down for the night.
  • Ensuring all close-up tasks are done i.e. hosing down outdoor areas, empty water bowls, taking the rubbish out.
