SPCA renews call for fireworks reform ahead of Guy Fawkes

04 November 2025

With Guy Fawkes approaching, SPCA is intensifying its advocacy efforts to protect animals from the distress and harm caused by fireworks.

SPCA renews call for fireworks reform ahead of Guy Fawkes

SPCA is calling for a nationwide ban on the private sale and use of fireworks - a move which is long overdue.

SPCA Chief Executive Todd Westwood says the impact of fireworks extends far beyond household pets.

“Every year, animals across Aotearoa suffer needlessly. Horses, farmed animals, zoo animals, marine life, and wild birds are all affected. It’s time for meaningful change.”

Last month, SPCA joined other key stakeholders in a meeting with Associate Minister for the Environment, Penny Simmonds, to discuss the urgent need for reform.

The Minister confirmed she is closely monitoring the issue, including three petitions currently before the Select Committee that call for a ban on the private sale and use of fireworks.

SPCA has supported these petitions, including one led by Animates which gathered more than 90,000 signatures from concerned Kiwis. The organisation has also made a submission to the Select Committee and will present at the upcoming oral hearing at Parliament.

To further raise awareness, SPCA has launched a new advocacy webpage outlining its long-standing campaign for fireworks reform. The page highlights key milestones in SPCA’s efforts to educate the public, businesses, and Government about the dangers fireworks pose to animals — from terrified pets and injured wildlife to native birds startled from their nests.

While legislative change remains the goal, SPCA is also focused on helping animals stay safe during this year’s celebrations. In partnership with RNZ Concert, SPCA is once again promoting “Concert for Animals” — a specially curated evening of soothing classical music airing from 6pm to midnight on 5 November. The programme offers a calming alternative to help mask the noise of fireworks.

Recognising that fireworks often continue for days before and after Guy Fawkes, SPCA has also created a Spotify playlist featuring the same relaxing music. The playlist is available for use in homes and SPCA Centres whenever animals need extra comfort.
