Flynn and Ruby
"We lost our dear long-time companion cat to old age a few weeks into Level 4 lockdown, in early April 2020. We went out to get a tiny ginger girl kitten called Ruby to fill the cat-shaped hole in our household in May 2020, just after New Zealand dropped down into Level 2 lockdown. On the way to Levin to pick her up, we greedily decided to get two kittens so they could keep each other entertained.
There were several kittens auditioning for the role of Ruby's sidekick, but the friendliest were all already promised to good homes. My wife's eye was drawn, however, to a poor traumatised boy who had been bought back twenty minutes beforehand, rejected from a home after a week and so very scared to be back with the SPCA among all the other stranger cats. Taking them home was traumatic too - he and Ruby had to share a cage, and he was hissing at her and huddling in one corner to get away from this tiny girl half his size.
We named the poor boy Flynn, and endured the first week where we thought he might have to go back. He was hiding under sofas, hissing at Ruby, wouldn't eat, and would not go near people. My wife made a concerted effort to give him some love and affection, and he gradually came out of his shell - and then just kept going. We now have a mad little kitten called Ruby growing into a petite and pretty cat who bounces around like Tigger (from Winnie-the-Pooh) and follows Flynn's lead for play, and an intelligent and very very affectionate Flynn who will snuggle with anyone of us he can and loves to curl up on the sofa by my wife's head. Unfortunately, we didn't check Flynn's feet carefully beforehand - at seven months old he is the size of a full grown cat, and his paws indicate that we're going to end up with something the size of a puma jumping on our chests for a scratch and a nuzzle every night!
The two of them just love each other, and are busy exploring the great outdoors together - Flynn curious and exploring, Ruby bouncing around after him when she can be torn away from her beloved collection of stolen pegs. They are very happy to be finally let outdoors, and to come in every now and again and curl up on their favourite humans."
